Prufrock (2015)
The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock (2015, 8’00”, digitised Super 8)
A young man walks the streets of London through the yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes. The film is a visual accompaniment to Mikey Georgeson’s new recording of T.S. Eliot’s famous poem in the year of its hundredth anniversary.
It is assembled from fragments of a Super 8 film in which a man and a woman fail ever to meet, despite their paths almost crossing on the neon streets of Soho and in the hall of Piccadilly Circus Underground station. The special Super 8 stock was negative rather than positive and it is this that lends the film a beige ambience that reflects Eliot’s “yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes.”
Three short documentary films I made with Dr Maia Jessop about Maori artist George Nuku and his restoration of a 19th century Waka (a Maori warrior canoe) to be exhibited at the newly-refurbished National Museums Scotland. The films were commissioned by NMS as additional information for visitors.
