THE EVENT OF 5th MAY 2011
HALAS AND BATCHELOR SPECIAL

Tom, Vivien and Captain Zip, with Tim Hope and Andy Riley in the background.
PART ONE: HALAS & BATCHELOR SCREENING
We were delighted to welcome Vivien Halas, the daughter of John Halas and Joy Batchelor to introduce a programme of her parents' films, which formed the first programme of the evening. You can see her introduction in this ten-minute video clip, which I shot on an iPhone:
From there we proceeded to a sceening of four Halas & Batchelor animated films, which you can see below:

1. "The Owl And The Pussycat" (1952, 7 minutes)

Direction: John Halas, Brain Borthwick

2. "The Figurehead" (1953)
Direction: John Halas, Joy Batchelor
Watch the film by clicking on the link here
3. "Foo Foo The Stowaway" (1960, 6 minutes)
Direction: Harold Whitaker, John Smith, Tony Guy, Terry Harrison
Watch the film here

4. "Butterfly Ball" (1976, 3 minutes 30 seconds)

Direction: Lee Misken

We then had a surprise addition to the Halas & Batchelor programme. Vivien had brought along a brand new transfer of "The Question", which Stan Hayward, who wrote the film, introduced. Stan explained that back in the 1960s, animation studios had something we don't have anymore: free time and it was through this that the film came to be made. Apparently the film lost out on a BAFTA to Bob Godfrey's film "Karma Sutra Rides Again."

5. "The Question" (1967, 8 minutes)

Script: Stan Hayward
Design: John Dick
Music: Jack King
Animation: Tony Guy, Tony Whitehouse
Sadly "The Question" is not available online, but you can find out more about other Halas & Batchelor films at Vivien's website at http://www.halasandbatchelor.co.uk A selection of films, including "Animal Farm", is available on DVDs at: http://www.halasandbatchelor.co.uk/dvds.asp.

PART TWO: MEMBERS' SCREENING
After the break we returns with an informal programme of films which attendees brought along on the night. These included:

1. "Sunday" by Zsuzsa Kohan (2011, 1 minute 40 seconds)

GRISTLE - The Short Clip from Jamie Clennett

2. " Gristle" (2011) by Jamie Clennett
Both Zsusza and Jamie introduced their fantastic work and Jamie suggested we join forces with the Scottish Animation Network.
PICKLETS
We were also approached by Australian animator Stewart Haines, who was only in London for about ten days about a new app for the iPhone which he has designed called a picklet. Stewart tells us:
"I'm a Melbourne-based software developer slash interactive media designer.
I'm in the UK for one week only to meet authors and artists interested in interactive content for iPhone/iPad and to demonstrate the production workflow for creating picklets.
The picklet project has a home on the web at;
http://picklet.net/about/
A picklet is a kind of digital popup book. Picklet authors don't need any programming skills, or any particular technical ability beyond some familiarity with Photoshop.
If you're interested, or know of some group who might be interested in a demo of the project please let me know. I'll be in London until the 14th of May.
cheers, Stewart."
